Wee Peggy!

This sweet little wheel is in excellent condition! Made by John Rappard in New Zealand. Wee Peggy wheels are quite popular with those who've been lucky enough to have one. It's a single treadle wheel that is set up as double drive.
There is on-the-wheel storage for three bobbins, plus the bobbin in use. It's easy to transport from room to room, or to your local spin-in.

San Luis Valley Folk Art and Fiber Exhibit

Jury Process: The SLV FAFF Jury will consist of professional and amateur artists. Final decisions will be based on the number and type, variety of applicants, application presentation, space availability, etc. There will be one prize awarded for People's Choice. The winning artist will receive a page on the festival website for one year highlighting their work. All images and info for said page will be provided by the winning artist (digital images only).

Fees: $20.00 for three entries, 10.00 each entry thereafter (unlimited). There will be a 30% commission on all works sold. The SLVFAFF will issue a sales check within 21 days of the exhibition closing. Fees can be paid through Paypal at the exhibit website page or by sending payment through Paypal to payment@slvfest.com.

Setup: Artists will need to drop their entries off at 1631Grande Avenue in Monte Vista on Monday, 6/6/08 from 10AM-12PM and pick them up between 10AM--1PM on Monday 6/14/08. Those who cannot make these times, should arrange to have another person drop off/pick up their work on their behalf as the organizers will not be available at another time. Works that are not picked up or have mailing arrangements made for them become the legal property of the SLVFAFF and are subject to disposal at our discretion.

Insurance: This exhibit is not insured. All artists who enter their works do so with this understanding and at their own risk. Please insure your shipped works both ways.

Publicity: This exhibit will be covered and advertised by means of radio, newspaper, direct mailing, Internet and television. All artists accepted for exhibition will remain linked to the SLVFAFF website for six months-except the winner of the Juror's Choice award (see above).

Media: All media are welcome, but works that best represent folk, traditional, naive arts, fine crafts and fiber arts will be prioritized.

Size Restrictions: All 2D works must be no larger than 36" x 48"installed. All 3D
works must be no taller than 36" tall and 24" wide at its widest point. All 3D works must be stable. No works will be shown that run the risk of falling.

Originality: All works must be original (no "kits" allowed), and executed within the last 3 years. No works previously submitted to the festival will be considered.

Images for jury: The jury will consider only digital images.No slides will be considered for exhibition and only digital images will be considered for publicity and web use. Images may be emailed to admin@slvfest.com. Works that do not live up to their image quality maybe disqualified from exhibition upon receipt.

We'll be doing a feature of each of the vendors and each of the workshop instructors for this year.

We'll have two contests running until mid June.

First, each time you post a comment on any 2009 entry about a workshop instructor your name will be entered into the "workshop scholarship" contest. This is a $45 value. So, if the workshop you want to take is $50, then you'll only have to pay $5!!

Secondly, each time you post a comment on any 2009 entry about a vendor your name will be entered into the "vendor gift certificate" contest. This is a $25 value that we'll pay to the vendor of your choice. More goodies from the fest are always a good thing!

Q. How long have you been making dolls, and how did you get involved in dolls & doll making?
Started seriously making them in 1997 after seeing an article in a magazine of a doll with silk ribbon embroidery. I was teaching classes for SRE for Michaels at the time, and thought it would be a fun project. By the time I got through designing an appropriate doll, I had several which I dressed as angels in flowers, shells, etc. and have been hooked since.

Q. What inspires you? Why dolls... instead of some other medium?
I still enjoy working in other media; however the wonderful thing about dolls is there are so many techniques incorporated into the process: designing, sewing, painting, applying "makeup", hair do's, accessories, etc. They can be as simple, or as intricate in detail as you want.

Q. Is there a particular doll size that you prefer to work with?
Not really, depends on what I’m trying to achieve. I have little angels and mermaids that are just about 3 inches. My newest doll, Marie Antoinette, is larger than what I usually make...she's 22 inches...most of my dolls are about 16 - 18". Storage is one consideration.

Q. Do you sit down flooded with ideas, or is it the result of a slowly developing process?
I just never know. It can be a piece of fabric, or a photograph, or often its challenges from magazines, or on-line groups. For the festival I thought it would be fun to make a simple doll which could relate to the venue, so we'll be using cloth of course, but adding yarns, fibers, cutouts, and just about anything the artist wishes to make the doll their own.

Q. What would you tell someone who wants to find their own creative "voice" in making dolls?
What I tell most people is to be willing to experiment. There is no right or wrong. Each effort teaches you something. That’s the fun of taking a piece of fabric and forming it into a "work of art". Of course there are times when you think you’re going to have one result, and the doll seems to have a mind of their own. So you go with the flow. Yes, I try talking to them, but sometimes it's just easier to let them have their way.

Q. We hear that you're going to be featured in Soft Dolls & Animals again? What’s new and exciting in your world right now?
After the editor contacted me about publishing some of my patterns, I was thrilled to send one of the dolls to her, so they can photograph for the cover of the July issue. Have had lots of dolls published in several magazines, but his is my first cover.

We're still in the process of accepting workshop proposals. We have some interesting possibilities in the works: Box weaving, kool-aid dyeing, papermaking, felting, spinning and more ....and just because you see your specialty listed doesn't mean you should put off proposing something either! A shorter or longer workshop on a the same subject may be just the thing someone is looking for!

We have a very big space, so we still have room for vendors too!

What are we working on? Postcards and sponsorships! Got an idea, drop us a line :)

This is a freeform piece I did for the International Freeform Guild Show. It called for 4 pieces that represent the elements. This one is "Water".

It's been a BIG week for inquiries, contest development, and vendor enrollment!
These are our recent additions: a coffee bar vendor, a bar-b-que vendor, another quilter, a clay artist, a jeweler and the local fiber guild! Phew!

And... I took some pix of the park now that it has greened up.

Wheel Raffle

I cannot believe I haven't posted a picture of the wheel that we are raffling!
So.. here it is. Two in fact! !!! :)

First prize is this Ashford Scholar Spinning wheel. The wheel is completely refinished and spins beautifully. It comes with three Ashford bobbins and a built in lazy kate. The single treadle folds up to make travel and storage a snap. The orifice is 3/8" The wheel currently has a poly drive band. However, the wheel comes with an Ashford maintenance kit that includes spinning oil, new hooks, cloth drive band, as well as other odds and ends.

This wheel is a perfect beginner wheel. We'll also give a free local spinning lesson.

Tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10.

Fine Print: Need not be present to win, HOWEVER, the winner must arrange pick up or pay for shipping. It can be packed up pretty small, and we're familiar with shipping fragile items. Winning ticket will be drawn July 15, 2007 at noon MST.
